I have been a full-time professional sculptor working exclusively in hardwoods for over 48 years. I am self-taught. Carving flowers in wood has been the artistic passion of my life. The process consists of hand-guided band-sawing, hand-carving, and sanding of solid pieces of wood. There is no bending of the wood in any way. All pieces are one-of-a-kind and they are highly finished and beg to be touched. My work is unique in the art world.
As a Fine Artist and Master Woodworker with over five decades of study and dedication to my craft, I have honed a deep reverence and understanding of the inherent qualities and potential of wood as my medium. My journey began with a fascination for the tactile and trans-formative nature of woodworking, a passion that has only grown stronger over the years. Each piece of hardwood I work with is one-of-a-kind and tells a unique story through its grain, texture, and color, and my role is to reveal and enhance these natural characteristics to create pieces that resonate with beauty. I carve intentionally and intuitively in my studios in rural Maine and Florida.
Central to my artistic expression is a profound love for flowers and the delicate forms and meaning that they embody. Inspired by their elegance and diversity, I have devoted considerable effort to capturing their essence in wood. Through meticulous craftsmanship and a keen eye for detail, I recreate the organic curves, intricate patterns, and subtle hues that define various floral species, with Lady Slippers, Daffodils, Lilies and Roses being some of my favorites to create of late. Whether sculpting a single blossom, crafting a detailed botanical scene or creating a more abstract expressionist floral inspired landscape, my goal is to evoke the same sense of wonder and appreciation that real flowers inspire.
My work is a testament to a lifetime of exploration and mastery in woodworking, blending technical skill with a deep-seated passion and respect for nature's artistry. Each creation is imbued with a sense of reverence for both the material and subject matter, inviting viewers to connect with the beauty of the natural world through its warmth and permanence. With every piece I produce, I not only showcase my technical proficiency but I also share a glimpse of the enduring joy and fulfillment that woodworking and floral forms bring to my life. My work is in private collections and has been exhibited at the Chicago Botanic Gardens Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art & Smithsonian Show, the Maine Coast Botanical Garden, Boston Flower Show and Tiffany & Company NYC.
